The "Willy Brandt Gymnasium"

Our school building is in the neighbourhood of two other schools. The "Hauptschule"and the "Realschule". There is also a church and a kindergarden in our neighbourhood. Our school, the "Willy Brandt Gymnasium", has two buildings, one for grade 5-10 and one for the Oberstufe. Our school has 28 classrooms. We have got a cafeteria. And wen also have rooms for special subjects: two Physics rooms, two Chemistry rooms, four Biology rooms, two Music rooms and two Art rooms. The teachers have got two staff rooms. When we have problems, we can go to the secretary's office.

Our Timetable

Usually we have thirty lessons a week. When you get older (about 14 or 15 years) you tend to have seven or eight lessons a day. There is no school on Saturdays and Sundays. We have two breaks a day. The first break is from 9.35-9.55. The second one is from 11.30-11.50. One lesson lasts 45 minutes. We have two terms a year.At the beginning we get a new timetable. We have school from 8 o'clock to twenty past one.

Subjects

Our subjects are English, Maths, German, History, Biology, Chemistry, French, Latin, P.E.,Geography, Art, Physics, Politics, RE and Music. In the seventh grade you can choose between French and Latin. In the ninth grade we can choose Latin as well. And in the eleventh grade we can choose Russian and France. In RE the Catholics and the Protestants are separate from each other. We have a classroom of our own. But we have to change rooms for Biology, Chemistry, Music, Physics, Latin or French, Art. In English we get the most homework!

English lessons

We usually have four English lessons a week. We write four tests (not as difficult as exams but just as important!) a term. We must learn new English vocabulary. Sometimes our teacher writes English grammar on the board and we have to learn it and write it down. Our English book has got 5 - 8 units. Here we work on a special problem or topic for zwecks. Sometimes they are about British schools, sometimes about children and their adventures. After every unit we write a test. Sometimes we do projects. Our last project was called "That's me". We had to collect photos of ourselves and talk about ourselves. For example: our hobbies, likes, dislikes... When we are older we'll probably read an English novel. Last year we saw a film and wrote a test about it. It was about London. We hope you can imagine what our English lessons are like!!!

School career

When you are six you go to primary school. You stay there from the first to the fourth grade. Then the teacher tells your parents which schools you can change to. The schools you can go to are Grammar School, Secondary Modern School (Realschule, Hauptschule) or Comprehensive school. You start in grade 5. In the seventh grade you choose a new language, Latin or French. You must learn a lot for these subjects. In grade 9 and 10 you can choose between different subjects: Latin, computer, Biology or Politics. When you are sixteen you can leave school. If you get good marks, you have the qualification for the "Oberstufe"and after three years you pass the final exam, the "Abitur". After that you are allowed to go to university.

Marks and Reports

German schools don't use letters as marks. They have got numbers. A 1 is the best, a 6 is the worst mark. At the end of a term, (we have two a year) we get our reports. On a German report you can see, if you must repeat the grade. You must do this, if at least 2 of your marks are five or six. We haven't got an exam at the end of a term. We have got three tests in a term, in the main subjects (Math, English, German, Latin or French).

Twin schools

Our twin schools in England (North Tyneside) is St. Thomas-More-School. You go to England by bus and boat in the eighth grade every two years. You are there in host families for ten days. You look at sights and you are at school one day. You go to England becauce you should learn to know something of the culture and to learn to speak the language. Our twin school in France (Lille) is College Saint Paul. Pupils from the eighth to the tenth grade go to France. They stay there for ten days, too. Our twin school in Russia is in Troizk near Moscow. You can go to Russia when you are in the eleventh or twelfth grade.

School trips

We have different trips during our time at school. The first trip takes place in the 5th grade , the first class at the grammar school. It is only a short trip for three days. The next trip takes place in the 7th grade. It is longer, about one week. We usually go to the North Sea. In the 9th grade we have a skiing trip to Austria for about 9 days. Three years later, in the 12th grade, we have a trip with one of our qualification courses to a place we want to go to.

Activities

At our school we have got many activities. For example our two drama clubs. We have got a moped club, too. At the moped club we learn to drive a moped. If we pass the final test, we'll get our driving licence. As regards musical activities we have three choirs, an orchestra and two further music clubs. We have sport activities, too. Every year we have a school festival at our school. There are a lot of sport activities. They is basketball, soccer, handball, volleyball and badminton. The teams who have won the games get a cup and one day off school. We also have cycling and swimming competitions in the summer. There are also swimming, tennis, soccer and volleyball competitions. Our school teams play against other school teams then.
